Modal underwear can go in the washing machine. Cold water, a mild detergent, and no fabric softener is most of the job.
The fibre itself is stronger wet than generic viscose. What actually fails first in underwear is the elastane knitted in with it. High heat and softener flatten that recovery, which is how a pair that used to stay on the thigh starts to crawl.

Can modal go in the washing machine?
Yes. Booie and many modal garments can be machine washed; always follow the garment’s care label. You do not need to hand-wash it as a rule.
Use a gentle or delicate cycle with similar colours. A mesh bag is useful if the rest of the load is heavy — jeans, towels, anything with zips — because a fine knit pills when it rubs hard against rough cloth.
Turn the pair inside out if you wash it with trousers. That is optional, not a ritual.
What temperature should you use?
Wash modal underwear in cold water. Treat 30°C / 86°F as the ceiling, not a target.
Cold is enough to get sweat and ordinary soil out of a next-to-skin knit. Hotter water does not make modal cleaner. It is harder on the elastane, more likely to fade dark colours, and more likely to set stains you would rather rinse out cool.
If a pair is genuinely filthy, a second cold wash beats one hot one.
Detergent, bleach and fabric softener
Use a mild liquid detergent. Powder is not forbidden; it just rinses less cleanly from a fine knit.
Skip bleach. Chlorine weakens cellulosic fibres. Oxygen bleach is kinder on whites, but everyday underwear rarely needs it if you wash after each wear.
Skip fabric softener. Softener leaves a coating. On underwear that coating sits against skin, holds odour, and gets in the way of the moisture movement modal is supposed to give you.
You do not need a special “underwear detergent.” Mild and fully rinsed is the point.

Does modal shrink?
Modal is more stable than cotton when it gets wet. A cold machine wash is not what usually shrinks it.
Heat is. A hot dryer can tighten the knit, and it is worse on the elastane than on the modal fibre. The pair may come out a little smaller, or — more often in underwear — the leg openings stop springing back. That feels like shrinkage even when the waist measurement has barely moved.
If a pair has already gone through high heat, washing it cold afterwards will not reverse the damage. Replace it when the legs stay baggy. Ride-up after many washes is often lost recovery, not a new sizing problem.
How to dry modal underwear
Line dry or dry flat when you can. Modal knits dry faster than a soaked cotton brief. In humid weather they still dry; they just take longer on a crowded rail. That is a reason to own a few extra pairs, not a reason to cook them in the dryer.
If you use a machine, tumble on low heat only, and take the pair out when it is dry rather than leaving it on a hot drum. High heat is the fastest way to spend the stretch in the legs and waistband.
Avoid direct, all-day sun on dark colours. A shaded line is enough.
In a climate where cotton underwear stays damp overnight, a light modal knit is usually dry by morning if the air can move. That is part of why the fibre shows up in underwear for hot, humid weather — care still has to keep the elastane intact, or the fit goes first.
What not to do
- Do not iron modal underwear. The knit does not need it, and the heat is pointless risk.
- Do not dry clean it. Solvents and the process are for a different kind of garment.
- Do not wring it out hard. Press water out, or let the spin cycle do that work.
- Do not store it stuffed against zips, Velcro or rough seams. Fine knits pill on hardware, not only in the wash.
Fold or roll. That is enough.
